SafeLog at IROS 2018, Madrid

The International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS) is one of the most important robotics conferences in the world. Over 3000 specialists from the Research and Industry participated in the five daylong conference from October 1-5, 2018 to exchange views on the latest innovations and technical developments through workshops, forums, discussions and the accompanying exhibitions. The Conference was sponsored by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), the world’s largest professional association of engineers and scientists.

At the exhibition, companies like Amazon, Bosch, Kuka and several others presented the latest robotic technologies. All the project partners from the research project SafeLog also presented the preliminary results for safe human-robot collaboration in Warehouses at the SafeLog Booth. The results caught attention of many at IROS and were a great success in the end!

Fifth General Assembly (At IML in Dortmund)

On September 6 and 7, 2018, SafeLog partners met again to review the overall project progress. Beside concrete presentations about the individual tasks achievements and preparation of the second interim report to the European Commission a major topic of the meeting was the finalisation of the preparation for the upcoming demonstration at IROS 2018. All main issues regarding the demonstration set-up are solved so far so the consortium is very optimistic concerning their planed participation in the event and public demonstration.

Fourth General Assembly (At CVUT in Prague)

Already two years that the project is running! Partners met at mid-term on January 25 and 26, in Prague to present progress achieved so far and identify upcoming challenges, and related action plans.

During the first day, the consortium started with a discussion about the system demonstration foreseen at the IROS 2018 and especially safety issues to take care of. In addition, concrete plans for integration of the overall system have been developed. The second day focussed on activities undertaken in the individual work packages in the last months, e.g. progress concerning safety vest. Finally, a fruitful discussion with Advisory Board members took place, with good advices concerning project continuation.

A year into the project, the second periodical General Assembly Meeting and Workshop Day took place at the University of Zagreb on January 24 and 25. The work package leaders were able to show the results achieved in the last year, and a number of proposed deliverables could be finalized. In this process, a number of promotion material was produced which will be available soon. A first significant milestone was reached when the safety concept was tentatively but successfully evaluated by the TÜV Nord for the first time.

In the coming months, AR and VR components will be added into the system, enhancing the potential of our test bed a lot. Together with the already working prototype of the safety vest and the communication modules, the core hardware components will be operative then.

At the workshop the following day, the safety analysis as well as the component framework and its inter-module communication – hardware as well as software – were discussed. An overview of the intended demonstrators and the needed test facilities concluded the meeting.


Second General Assembly (At Fraunhofer IML in Dortmund)

At our first periodical General Assembly Meeting and Workshop Day which took place at the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML) in Dortmund on June 28 and 29, the state of play for all work packages was discussed intensely. Also at this meeting, the SafeLog Advisory Board members were introduced to the partners and to our proposed work. The consortium is happy to benefit from the vast experience and knowledge of our Advisory Board!

The next day, an in-depth presentation on the software and System Architecture used at our partner organizations and a discussion on Safety Concept and the Safety Vest followed. The target that we aim for is to have a clear vision of the working environment and conditions very soon and find possible safety approaches to work on for the next 42 months. Our hardware will be set up in a way so that safety is intrinsically included in the design as much as possible and doesn’t rely on systems performing always as foreseen. An intense discussion about the different choices of communication and the possible channels to be used closed the discussion.

Finally, we visited the labs of the IML to get to know the institute and the research being done there. Especially we focused on the possible demonstration setup.

From the 2nd of February till the 4th of February, our Kick-Off-Meeting was held at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Karlsruhe, consisting of the General Assembly on the first day and a more informal scientific work shop on the additional days. We took care of formal issues like the expected work for the deliverables ahead, an introduction to all work packages and a brief discussion on milestones and possible project risks in the General Assembly first. Especially the discussion about the System Architecture with its different interfaces and components gave us a shared understanding of the SafeLog System. During the work shop, a more in-depth look into the peculiarities of the work packages and the technologies envisaged for followed. There we focused in groups on the topics Safety Concept, Safety Vest, Heterogeneous Fleet Management and Augmented Reality.

The third day, during which an update on the interconnection between the tasks could be developed, finalized the meeting. On the 1st of February , a visit at a 3PL (third-party logistics) warehouse at an e-commerce company enabled us to get a hands-on approach to the problems persons working in a highly automated and innovated warehouse are facing today.
